Tours and research by appointment only
The Athenaeum is a very comprehensive research library with an emphasis on architecture, housing numerous books on design, history, and famous builders. The building itself is a brownstone from the 1850s which was designed by John Notman. Since tours and research are available by appointment only, we suggest either just strolling by this attraction or making arrangements a few days in advance.
Inside are vast resources of materials about American travel, exploration, modes of transportation, and other things of that nature. Aside from books, you’ll also be able to find furniture, paintings of houses, and a gallery that features ever-changing exhibits. Unless you’re a graduate student or have an insatiable thirst for architectural knowledge, there is no real reason to visit the Athenaeum. It is a very nice building, however, so if you’re in the area (and you will be, if you’re touring historic Philadelphia,) stop by, if only to be able to tell your friends you were there. |
