Description and Basic Information ::
|
The Academy of Music on Broad and Locust Streets was opened to the public back in 1857 and is the permanent home of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Fashioned after the La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy, the structure is replete with a large crystal chandelier, murals covering the ceiling, and various carvings scattered throughout the lobby area. Its Friday-night concerts draw all types of crowds, including art lovers from miles around.
Another draw of the Academy is that it is very accessible to everyone; there are always $7.00 tickets for seats up in the rafters, but it truly allows any art lover to have the opportunity to take in a show at a more than reasonable cost. Tickets are always available at the box office for both the Friday night engagements and also for productions by the Opera Company of Philadelphia and for the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, which is also held here. The world-famous Nutcracker show, a holiday favorite, is featured here as well.
Anyone interested in a tour should call ahead of time, as they are usually granted by reservation on Tuesday afternoons. No music lover should deprive themselves of the opportunity to see one of the country’s leading orchestras, and the Academy of Music caters to the enjoyment of all. |
